5 Preparation Steps For Sod Installation

Sod installation takes some preparatory work. Knowing what to expect when putting down sod can help you prepare.

1. Mark Irrigation Lines

Sod installation doesn't typically require deep digging, so your installer may not require marked lines like gas lines. You will want to mark the location of your sprinkler lines, primarily the emitters, with lawn flagging. Doing so will prevent damage to hidden sprinkler heads when your installer begins to tear out the old turf. It's also a good idea to shut off the water to the sprinklers during installation, to prevent leaks in case a line is damaged.

2. Set the Stage

A staging area is necessary during sod installation. Your installers need a place to safely stack the sod once it is delivered. The area should be large enough to roll out sod lengths and cut them as necessary. A driveway works well, as does a patio. Clear the area and make sure access to the staging area is also clear for both delivery vehicles and workers before your installers arrive.

3. Remove Old Turf

All old grass and plants must be removed before laying sod, or the sod won't properly root. Instead it will rot in place. To save money, you can opt to rent a sod cutter and strip out the old turf yourself before the installers arrive. Otherwise the installers will tear out the grass a day or more in advance of installation for larger projects, and on the same day if it is a small project that they can complete in a day.

4. Test and Amend

Once the old turf is gone, the soil can be sampled and tested to determine its quality and nutrient load. Testing will dictate amendments. High quality soil may only require some fertilizing, while low quality soil may require amending with compost and other organic matter, or with minerals that will adjust the acidity of the soil. This step is crucial if you want your sod to grow well from the beginning.

5. Fill Low Spots

The last thing necessary before actually laying down the sod is to level the ground. The installers will rake and shovel around the soil until the ground is level and slopes gradually away from the house. They may have to bring in extra topsoil to fill low spots, as well. Once complete, the ground is well watered in preparation of sod installation.
