Options For Using Mulch In Your Landscaping

Mulch is an extremely versatile material that can have many different uses around your property. Deciding on the various ways that you want to use mulch in your landscaping can be an important step for determining the amount or type of mulch that you should order for your property.

Apply Around The Base Of Major Plants

Applying a layer of mulch around the base of major plants is a common strategy. The mulch will be able to protect the plants in a couple of important ways. One of the most well-known will be the ability of the mulch to keep the soil at the base of these plants moist. However, it is also possible for the mulch to significantly reduce the ability of weeds to grow near the base of the plant, and it can also limit the tendency for the soil to wash away. Lastly, the mulch will return nutrients to the soil over time as it breaks down.

Use As Padding For Play Areas

If you have small children, they may spend a considerable amount of time outdoors playing. Not surprisingly, this can lead to a variety of minor injuries from accidents. Falling on the hard ground or sharp rocks can be a common source of these injuries. A layer of mulch over the areas in the yard where your children play can act as a type of padding to lessen the force of impacts due to minor falls. It can also act as a barrier that can limit the risk of your child landing on a sharp stone that could leave a deep cut. Making the mulch at least a couple of inches thick can help to ensure it is providing an appropriate amount of padding for this busy area in your yard.

Creating Affordable Paths Through The Property

The creation of paths through the property can be necessary for keeping individuals from trampling important plants. If you are wanting to avoid the need to use expensive stone or to have these areas of the property paved, mulch can be used to create attractive and effective pathing through your yard. Edging is advisable along the sides of this path so that the mulch will be held in place better, but it will always be necessary to occasionally supplement the mulch to replace any that may have broken down as a result of decomposition or that may have washed away during periods of intense weather.
