2 Kinds Of Retaining Walls You Can Try

When you live on a hill, there are a lot of things that you have to think about, including erosion of your hill. It's very easy for the wind and the rain to start washing away part of your yard or even undermining it. There are several ways that you can handle that and keep the hill where it's supposed to be. One way you can do it is to build some kind of retaining wall. There are various kinds of walls that you can use.

Cement/Masonry Walls

These materials are put together because they can create a similar kind of wall, namely one that is solid and has no holes in it. When it comes to cement walls, the person making the walls will place a mold around the area where you want the wall. The mold will probably only be three-sided because the hill itself will act as the 4th wall. Once the mold or form has been placed, the contractor may add in rebar or some other stabilizing material, depending on how big and tall the wall is going to be. The rebar or other material will make the cement wall stronger and help it last longer. Then the contractor will pour cement and let it cure. Masonry can refer to bricks or cinder blocks. They will be put together so that there aren't any gaps, with mortar in between the rows so that everything sticks together.

Loose Rocks

Another option is to make a retaining wall out of large rocks. This kind of wall would be wider at the bottom than at the top because it would have to support all the rocks at the top. You would just keep piling on rocks on top of each other and leaning them against the hill until you get the wall as high as you want it. You will want to be careful when you are doing this because the rocks are loose and could fall. You might want to fill in empty spaces with smaller gravel, which can help to stabilize the rocks and help everything be more stable. You might also want to plant climbing plants, like ivy or something similar. That will both help to hold the rocks in one place and help to stabilize the soil underneath the rocks.
